Study with Kim Johnson and let the fun begin!

You will love studying with Kim Johnson as she shows you how to overcome the daunting challenge of the 'blank paper'.  Kim can show you how to approach the art of expressive watercolor with both enthusiasm and determination.  Explore watercolor in a loose and colorful way, with techniques for putting down fresh and colorful first washes and working large to small.

  • Study a variety of techniques: wet into wet, graded washes & grazing
  • Explore composition - the value, rhythm, massing in areas and movement
  • Gain confidence in painting the human form or portrait
  • Learn to make exciting paintings from your photos
  • Upgrade your painting abilities
  • Become more analytical of your own work and the work of others

With Kim, you will learn how to not stress about the small things and just have FUN!!!  Sessions are held regularly at KJ-Art Studio or through community locations.

To arrange a group workshop, please contact Kim via email.

"Kim taught simple ways to improve your painting skills, correct drawing was emphasized, along with clean color, two methods were taught, wet and dry...wet was fun, and the dry method was more detailed. Kim is easy to work with and spent time with each student. I will definitely attend the workshop next year."

"I have never painted portraits and frankly was quite tentative. Kim immediately put us at ease and continued to expand our horizons and color palette. She is supportive and fun, while she encourages and teaches about a subject that could be overwhelming. Thanks Kim."

"The watercolor workshop with Kim Johnson was a delightful learning experience.  Not only did I benefit from Kim's demonstrations and near encyclopedic knowledge of the craft, but I received personal suggestions regarding my work as I progressed on a painting.  Kim has a natural, relaxed manner which certainly made it easy to experiment without feeling threatened or inadequate. I highly recommend her classes."

2017 Annual Watercolor Workshop

The workshop will concentrate on painting shapes and the application of paint with correct values, leaving lost and found edges for interest and movement, and integrating the foreground with the background to make a cohesive painting.  Participants will learn to leverage their contour drawing as a guide (not a border) as the basis for building form with the use of glazes and washes.  This is an excellent workshop for gaining confidence in painting the human and animal forms, upgrading your painting ability and learning to be more analytical of your own and others paintings.  Lots of personal attention!!!
